Under Tension

Under Tension is a series that explores the quiet strain that exists where surfaces meet, press, or are forced to hold together. These works are not about rupture or collapse, but about the moment just before—when materials appear stretched, stitched, compressed, or held in an uneasy balance.

Across the series, repeated textures and vertical forms suggest structure and containment, while softer, frayed edges introduce movement and vulnerability. The surfaces feel worked and layered, as though built slowly over time, carrying traces of pressure rather than gesture. There is a sense that something has been bound, reinforced, or repaired—yet the effort remains visible.

In this grouping of three, tension is not only internal to each work but relational. The darker piece introduces weight and resistance, pulling against the cooler, more restrained compositions beside it. The two lighter works echo one another through palette and texture, while never fully aligning, creating a subtle rhythm of repetition and variation. Together, the set reads less as harmony and more as a held configuration—elements coexisting without fully resolving.

Under Tension reflects a broader interest in threshold states: where softness meets structure, where order begins to fray, and where stability is maintained through constant, unseen effort. These works invite slow looking, rewarding attention to surface, edge, and the spaces where materials seem to push back against one another.

Rather than offering release, the series lingers in that suspended moment—quiet, compressed, and deliberately unresolved.
